From bakery to underground railway
Hotel Bakeriet has a long and interesting history. The building was constructed following Trondheim's two big fires in the mid-1800s, as one of the most modern bakeries in Europe. 12,000 people got their bread on a daily basis from the Halseth bakery, which was run for a long time by the resourceful Adolf Halseth. Among other things, he built his own power plant and an underground electric railway that ran to the warehouse a few doors down. All this history is still palpable in the hotel today. Exhibits and ornaments from days gone by are everywhere.
